PACHECO NOMINATED FOR GOVERNOR'S AWARD

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, February 13, 2008: Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco has been nominated for the Governor's Victim Advocacy Award for Outstanding Service to Crime Victims. The award recognizes leadership with emphasis on homicide survivors. The announcement was made on January 31, 2008. Pacheco was nominated by Palm Springs Police Chief David Dominguez for, "his commitment to providing outstanding service to victims of crime and families and friends who have suffered the tragic loss of a loved one by homicide."

"I am deeply honored to receive this nomination on behalf of crime victims locally and throughout the state whose voices deserve to heard," said District Attorney Rod Pacheco.

Pacheco is now entering his second year as Riverside County District Attorney. Since he took office in January, 2007, he has been a tireless advocate for victims' rights which he considers a top priority. Victims' rights policies and programs new to the office include:

  • Death Penalty case review policy in which Pacheco personally meets with family members of homicide victims to gather their thoughts and feelings about the loss of their loved one, crime and punishment, and their beliefs about the death penalty.
  • The Victims' Rights Project to identify and ensure that every statutory right is afforded to crime victims and witnesses by law, to evaluate current practices, and to develop strategies and encourage other government agencies by developing best practices.
  • Victims' Rights Week events that include candlelight vigils in remembrance of crime victims, a luncheon to honor and recognize victims' rights advocates, and a march and rally that received an overwhelming response from the community last year as nearly 2,000 people took to the streets of Riverside to march in support of victims' rights.

Pacheco was sworn as Riverside County District Attorney in January of this year. He leads the third largest district attorney's office in California with a staff of more than 800 employees, including 300 prosecutors.

Pacheco began his career in the Riverside County District Attorney's Office in 1984. During his tenure, he specialized in homicide and death penalty cases. Five of those murderers are currently awaiting execution on California's death row.
