MURDER FUGITIVE RETURNED FROM MEXICO RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, June 1, 2007: District Attorney Rod Pacheco announced that a fugitive wanted for the murder of an Army National Guardsman was returned to Riverside County from Mexico today. "Justice has been delayed but the victim, a brave American hero, and his family have not been forgotten. They're voices were finally heard today. Riverside County authorities appreciate the cooperation of the Mexican authorities in bringing this murderer to justice," Pacheco said. Fabian Cayetano Urrea is charged with the June, 2005 murder of Jorge Estrada, an Army National Guardsman. Estrada was on leave from the war in Iraq awaiting the birth of his wife's child who was fathered by Urrea. Estrada welcomed the opportunity to raise the child as his own. While visiting the Estrada apartment, Urrea became involved in an argument with Jorge Estrada. Urrea pulled out a handgun and fired at Estrada, killing him. Urrea immediately fled the scene and subsequently ended up in Mexico. Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit developed leads regarding Urrea's whereabouts in July, 2006 and began working with Mexican authorities. Urrea was apprehended at his business and has been in custody in Mexico awaiting extradition back to Riverside County to face murder charges. This is the second fugitive extradited to Riverside County from Mexico in the last two months. Three other fugitives are in custody in Mexico awaiting extradition. The Fugitive Apprehension Unit Team is headed by Deputy District Attorney Jeanne Roy along with District Attorney Investigators Lodi Clark and Leanard Ortiz and Investigative Technician Margaret Swank. The team is currently seeking to extradite fugitives from Canada as well as from countries in Central and South America. |
