URREA GUILTY OF MURDERING SOLDIER
French Valley - A Riverside County jury convicted Fabian Cayetano Urrea of first
degree murder and found true an allegation that he used a firearm during the
commission of the killing.
"This is a just ending to a tragic story," said District Attorney Rod Pacheco. "Our
prosecutor did a great job of navigating through a complex case and was able to
secure justice on behalf of the victim."
On June 9, 2005, Urrea confronted the victim, 24-year-old Jorge Estrada, in the
parking lot of a Murrieta apartment complex. Estrada, a U.S. Army National
Guardsman, returned home on emergency leave from Iraq to be with his wife when
she gave birth. Urrea, who turned 24 on September. 12, is the biological father of
the child, but Estrada was going to raise the child as his own. During the parking lot
confrontation, Urrea pulled a handgun, shooting the victim three times and killing
him. Urrea fled to Mexico, but was captured in January 2007.
The case, SWF012120, was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sam Kaloustian.
"The jury had some very complex issues and facts to deal with. It was a very
emotional case for them, but after careful deliberation they came to the right
decision," said Kaloustain. "Justice was done today."
Urrea is scheduled to be sentenced at 9:00 a.m. on November 13, 2009 in
Department S304 of the Southwest Justice Center, 30755 Auld Road, Murrieta.
