 FORENSIC TECHNICIAN I $3,127.09 - $4,074.82 monthly
Under direct supervision, to learn to identify, collect, preserve, photograph, and compare fingerprints and other physical evidence at crime scenes; to photograph, develop, print, enlarge, and reduce photographs; and to do other work as required.
Incumbents in this class serve as entry level field evidence technicians identifying, photographing, collecting, and preserving physical evidence at crime scenes for laboratory analysis. Incumbents may be promoted to the next higher class of Forensic Technician II upon satisfactory job performance.
Examples of Essential Duties:
- In a training capacity, assists in searching for,
collecting, and categorizing evidence at crime scenes for laboratory analysis;
assists in collecting, identifying, developing, and preserving latent
fingerprints.
- Preserves, compares, and attempts to identify evidence such
as blood, hair, fibers, cloth, wood, paint, and glass fragments; takes and
compares physical impressions to attempt to connect evidence with suspects.
- Interviews witnesses as to location of evidence; tags,
marks, and stores evidence collected; refers evidence to criminal laboratory for
chemical analysis.
- Photographs crime scenes, suspects, and evidence; develops,
prints, enlarges, and reduces color and black and white photographs or slides;
prepares photographs and crime scene sketches for court exhibits; prepares
detailed written reports.
- May testify in court; attends post mortem examinations,
collects pathological samples and evidence for laser clinical examination.
- Photographs results of autopsy for criminal investigation
and prepares photos for court presentation; receives training in the function and
use of laser powered fingerprint equipment both in the lab and at crime scenes.
- Learns the function and use of the computerized bar code
inventory control system used for evidence movement, storage, and accountability.
