 FORENSIC TECHNICIAN II $3,296.25 - $4,297.75 monthly
Under general supervision, to identify, collect, preserve, photograph, and compare fingerprints and other physical evidence at crime scenes; to develop, print, enlarge, and reduce photographs; and to do other work as required.
Incumbents in this class serve as journey level field evidence technicians identifying, photographing, collecting, and preserving physical evidence at crime scenes for laboratory analysis. This class differs from Forensic Technician III in that incumbents in the latter class function as working supervisors over field evidence personnel.
Examples of Essential Duties:
- Searches for, collects, and preserves evidence at crime
scenes for laboratory analysis; photographs crime scenes, collisions, suspects, or evidence; takes, classifies, and identifies fingerprints.
- Develops and preserves latent fingerprints; collects,
preserves, compares, and attempts to identify evidence such as blood, hair,
fibers, cloth, wood, paint, and glass fragments.
- Takes and compares physical impressions to attempt to
connect evidence with suspect; refers evidence to criminal laboratory for chemical analysis; develops, prints, and enlarges color and black and white photographs.
- Interviews witnesses as to location of evidence; constructs
court exhibits; operates comparison microscope and binocular microscope.
- Reviews and examines questioned documents; analyzes
handwriting to determine identifying characteristics and attempts to identify the
writer by comparison of handwriting on disputed documents with known samples;
analyzes inks, typewriter, check protector copy, papers, and watermarks to
identify printed or written materials with the machines or persons producing them.
- Prepares detailed records; tags, marks, preserves, and
stores evidence that is collected; locates owners of recovered property.
- May review the work of lower field evidence collection
personnel; prepares detailed written reports.
- Testifies in court as an expert witness.
- Attends post mortem examinations; collects pathological
samples and evidence for latter clinical examination; photographs autopsies of
criminal investigations; prepares photos for court presentation.
- Trains personnel in the function and use of laser powered
fingerprint equipment both in the lab and at crime scenes, and trains personnel in the function and use of the computerized bar code inventory control system used
for evidence movement, storage, and accountability.
